Q: I have recently started a new job, and the health benefits do not kick in until May 1st. I left my last Job on March 20 and have not received any information on COBRA. I have recently been injured and need some health insurance information, hopefully from COBRA. What can I do?
A: Your previous employer (assuming they have more than 20 employees) or plan administrator has up to 45 days to mail you the COBRA packet from your last day of group benefits. You should contact them for the status of your election form. Once you elect COBRA the insurance is retro-active, so you will not have a lapse in coverage. Any claims that occur during this time period will be paid once the paperwork has been processed. If you paid any medical bills out of pocket the insurance company will reimburse you based on the benefits you had before you left your job.
