Q: Our 23 year old daughter was teaching in Thailand from June 2007-February 2008, had health insurance with the school in Bangkok. She has returned to the US, is 4 months pregnant with no insurance. My husband can not claim her on our insurance as she is no longer in school and she does not have a job at this time. Can she obtain COBRA insurance to cover the remainder of her pre-natal care, post- natal, and the care of the baby?
A: COBRA is a federal law that allows an employee to keep their US employer's group benefits when a qualifying event occurs. Since your daughter did not have a US employer, she is not eligible for COBRA. I suggest that you call your state's department of insurance to see what plans are offered through them when COBRA is not an option. You can find your state's contact information at www.naic.org If she doesn't qualify for any state plans, she may be eligible for a healthcare savings program you can visit www.benicard.com for more details.
