Q:I quit my job over 60 days ago. I was told I could keep my insurance coverage thru my previous employer for 18 months. I have been making payments to my employer. I have NEVER heard of COBRA insurance. I assumed I was still on the same policy. AM I REALLY COVERED? What plan am I on? Do I use my same insurance card? Am I supposed to get a packet of info from my previous employer? I want to drop my husband from the plan and just keep me insured. Can I do that?
A:COBRA is a federal law (not an insurance company) that requires an employer to offer you continuation of their group benefits when you quit your job.You will make your COBRA payments to the former employer or their COBRA administrator.Since COBRA is a continuation of the same benefits you had before, you should be able to use the same ID card. You can elect you COBRA for just yourself and remove your husband.
