Q: Hello, I was laid off from my job on December 1st 2008. My coverage is good up until the end of the month and I was inquiring about the process for extending the medical and dental coverage for at least another month. Thank you.
A: Cobra is a federal law that requires a previous employer to offer a temporary continuation of benefits when someone loses coverage. The employer or their plan administrator has up to 45 days to mail you the COBRA paperwork from your last day of benefits. Some COBRA plan administrators will give you the option of signing up on line or by telephone. Your employer can give you the contact information of their plan administrator. However, you may have to wait until you receive the paperwork before you can sign up. Once you elect COBRA, your coverage is retro-active to your last day of benefits. You will not have a lapse or gap in coverage.
