Q: Hi...My wife and I are current employed and get healthcare through separate group plans (she's not on my plan and i'm not on hers). I will be leaving my job voluntarily this month and was planning to enroll in Cobra. We are planning a family (wife is not currently pregnant), but we expect a child in 2010. My wife is planning to leave her job in June of this year. It would seem that our best option is for me to take COBRA through my employer (i'd be covered thru August 2010) and for her to take COBRA thru her employer when she leaves work and to put the newborn child on her COBRA (since she'll be leaving work after me, she and the child could be kept on her plan for 18 months which would be December 2010 in case I was not employed by that time). Do you see this as the best option, or are there others that I'm missing? Also, if I am still not employed by August 2010, when my COBRA expires, can I convert to her COBRA plan? Lastly, we currently live in NY, but would be moving to CT...do we need to verify that her COBRA would cover us (and our child) in another state? Thank you in advance -Edward
A: Hi Edward - you are definitely right when you state that she has to elect Cobra, especially if she becomes pregnant. If you leave a job, and you are pregnant, your only option is Cobra (if available) to have coverage for the pregnancy. Insurance Carriers look at pregnancy as a pre-ex condition if you were looking for individual coverage. Now, NY is a more difficult state to actually find individual coverage in. So Cobra is typically the best choice for NY residents.
You will need to check with the Insurance Carrier to see if they also write in the state of CT in order to move with your cobra.
