Q: I am 21 weeks pregnant and I had to leave my job the last day of December 2008. I had blue cross blue shield but I was not offered or even informed about COBRA Ins. My dr. is making me pay in full by my next visit and the hospital is charging me an extra $5000+ that has to be paid within the next 3 months. All of your plans say "do not cover pre-exsisting conditions"...do you have anything for me?
A: Unfortunately, our plans will not cover any pre-existing conditions (including pregnancy). I would recommend contacting your previous employer to find out where your Cobra packet is. The federal law Cobra, requires there to be at least 20 employees in order for it be mandatory. If it is less, then its not required for them to offer you a continuation. If you are eligible for Cobra, then the coverage goes back retroactive, so you have no lapse in coverage and any incurrred expenses will be reimbursed to you. Cobra extends the group insurance you already had with that employer.
