Q: I was laid off/ terminated through no fault of my own in Oct. Since that time, I have had a difficult time paying my living expenses and my cobra payments; esp. with my co-payments and January deductible. In fact, I was informed in February that because my January payment was several weeks late, my cobra coverage was terminated. Since that time, I talked to the company managing my cobra, on several occasions, about the possibility reinstatement or an appeals process, but was told that I have no recourse. However, today I was told that the stimulus package that is scheduled to take affect in April is designed to assist those of us that were laid-off and are having a difficult time paying for healthcare. I have a pre-existing condition so having insurance coverage is absolutely essential for me. My questions: *Does the stimulus package make any provisions for people that have had their coverage terminated for late payments. (Not following the terms of the contract") *What about re-instatement.
A: For information on the stimulus package and how it will affect you, you should contact the Federal Department of Labor, they regulate the COBRA law. The department of labor’s phone number is 866-444-3272 or visit their website at www.dol.gov. You may also contact your previous employee to see if you are eligible.
