Q:Hello. I am currently using COBRA via my ex-employer.I am still eligible for COBRA until 2009, but does my previous employer going out of business drop my COBRA coverage? I was in a car accident that was not my fault that injured my neck. I'm having trouble getting other insurance due to this injury. I need a long term health care plan. Can you tell me if I will still be able to use COBRA even though they are out of business? And if not, are there any other options? Thanks.
A:Cobra is a continuation of your coverage through your previous group plan.If your previous employer goes out of business and there is no longer a group plan, you would not be able to continue coverage. You can contact your insurance provider and see if they have an individual health plan that they could offer and that would suit your needs. You could also try contacting your State Department of Insurance and see if they have any plans they can offer as well.
