Q: I am currently paying over $1600 per month for family health/dental insurance with my previous employer who has told me that they are exempt from the recent laws that provide reductions in COBRA expenses due to the fact that they are considered "a church plan." The company is a Catholic hospital. I have already met my deductible expenses for the year so it seems that I am better off paying this high cost for insurance until the end of the year, then maybe trying to find an independent insurance company with lower rates. My questions are: Can you give me any other options at this time or do you foresee any new legislation by the federal government to help those of us in this situation?
A: To my understanding I believe your previous employer is correct, due to the fact it is a Church organization the Cobra coverage is not subject to the subsidy. What we offer here are plans that offer either a short term medical or a permanent insurance option.
