Q: I worked for 4 years for a company in New Jersey that last August relocated me to Charlotte, NC. I was laid off on March 2, 2009. The company is offering to leave me on their health plan until the end of 2009. Can I still apply for COBRA coverage, when should I apply and for how long will I be covered given that my employer covers me until the end of the year. Please advise.
A: Your previous employer or their plan administrator should provide you with COBRA information around the time that your coverage will end – the end of 2009. At that time you will be eligible to elect COBRA, which means you will pay the entire premium for continuing the same coverage that you had with that employer or, you could consider individual coverage plans. There are a variety of options for individual coverage – permanent or temporary – that can fit your situation. Click here for a quote!
