Q:  A friend of mine (former fellow employee) is at this moment in the ICU with his wife, she has had a stroke. The company we worked for ceased operations on 2-9-09 we were given a severance package for 60 days premiums were paid during this period (his wife was on the policy). My question is since she fell ill on 5-22-09 can he elect to make the Cobra payment and have this terrible event covered or is he too late Thanks

A:  Unfortunately, if the company closed its doors and they no longer have a group health plan, than Cobra is not going to be an option.  If there is still a group health plan, there may be a possibility that he can apply, but he would need to talk to the HR department of the company.

If Cobra is not an option, then I would recommend talking with your State Department of Insurance to see if there is anything they can offer you.  As well as maybe trying to speak with your/his insurance carrier to see if they can take out an individual policy instead of the group health plan that he was originally on.  Which may be difficult to get individual coverage, due to the fact that she’s under a doctor’s care, I wish there was more I could offer you, I wish you the best of luck.
