Q: I will be 63 and a half and will retire then. I will take cobra ins. for my wife and myself until I reach 65 at which time I will go on Medicare. My wife is 6 months younger than me. Will she be able to stay on my cobra ins. until she reaches 65 under the qualifying event rule. (Me going on Medicare) Thank you!
A: Your wife will be able to stay on Cobra longer than you, because you are eligible for Medicare. Due to the qualifying event, to my understanding she should be able to get an extension for X amounts of months. To verify that information, as well as how many additional months she will be able to stay on the Cobra coverage, I would speak with your Cobra administrator directly to verify that coverage. If you don’t know who your Cobra administrator is, call your previous employer they may be able to answer your questions or give you the number of whom you need to speak with.
