Q: My family is on Cobra as my husband was laid off. I filled out all of the necessary paperwork and checked that we wanted dental coverage. My dentist informed me today that we know longer have coverage. I contacted the HR person where my husband worked and she stated that Cobra would not cover dental, only medical. The company had a separate policy for medical and dental, but you could purchase both as an employee. It is my understanding that even though my husband is laid off, he could receive the same benefits that were offered to full time employees through Cobra. We are a few days away from being at the 3 month mark of my husband being laid off and I am very worried about this dental insurance as one of my family member’s needs dental work immediately. Any help is greatly appreciated.
A: If your husband had dental coverage when he was working, than the dental option should be available to him through Cobra. Cobra is the exact same coverage as he had when he was working. You can visit the website www.dol.gov/COBRA to see if you can find any further information, but to my understanding if he had dental when he was working he can continue the dental on Cobra. It should be an option to him.
