Q:  If my group plan ends 8/31/09 and do not talk to anyone or sign up for cobra and I have a medical issue 9/2/09, do I still have the 45days to elect cobra, pay the premium back from 9/1/09 and have coverage for the issue on 9/2/09?

A:  When you lose a job, if you are eligible for Cobra, your company has 45 days from your last day of benefits to supply you with the Cobra packet.  You then have 60 days to elect the coverage, when you elect the coverage it goes retro-active to your last day of benefits.  Therefore, until you elect the coverage if something does happen to you, you are under an “umbrella” of coverage and you should be covered once you take Cobra.
