Q: I just received an email from my previous employer that I owe them $200 a month for a premium increase for April-June of 2009. I am no longer insured with cobra through the company as of July 1 2009. Prior to the email I never received any notice of a premium increase. Is there any recourse I can take or am I obligated to pay them?
A: I am unsure as to why they would have said you owe more for your premium, especially since it was a few months ago. I wish I could give you more information, however my recommendation would be to contact your past employer directly or your HR/Benefits department to verify as to why you are being notified now and as to why it premium was increased. That would be your starting point, from there if you feel that your rights are not being met you can visit www.dol.gov/COBRA they oversee the Cobra law and maybe they can help you further along as to what’s going on and if you need to pay the increase.
