Q: My job was terminated due to a reduction in force (involuntary termination). I am 61 years old. My wife is 56. My wife has been covered under my work health plan. Can I continue COBRA coverage until age 65 when I will have medicare? If so, can my wife continue COBRA coverage until she is 65?
A:  Upon termination your employer will have 45 days to mail you and your spouse an election packet for COBRA.  If elected to enroll you will have coverage under their group health policy for up to 18 months.  I would suggest contacting your state department of insurance to see if there is a state issued mini-COBRA plan that you can take advantage of once the 18-month period expires.
