Q: I am 60 1/2 years old with cancer, I was terminated from my last job while I was on disability and I went on COBRA for 18 moths which will end October 31st, 2009. I am no longer on disability but I have not been able to find a job yet. I heard that if you are over 60 years old and you are on COBRA, you can stay on COBRA till you become 65 and be eligible for Medicare. Is this true? I very much appreciate your answer.
A: With Cobra, once you have been on the coverage its maximum duration you can’t stay on it any longer. You cannot keep it until you are on Medicare. If you have used Cobra to its longest time available to you, I recommend either finding a job that offers group health insurance or finding your own individual coverage. If you would like to see what alternative individual plans we have call 877-279-7959 x 206.
