Q: My husband was terminated from his job and offered a severance package which included health benefits for 18 months. He was never offered Cobra. Once his 18 months is up and we no longer have health benefits, can my husband contact his former employer to enroll in cobra? Also, will he be eligible for the Federal stimulus package, seeing that he was terminated during that timeframe? Does the employer now have 45 days from our last day of benefits to supply us with the Cobra packet? Also if this is retro back to the date of termination, will we have the 18 months of cobra coverage?
A: You would need to find out if those 18 months of coverage/severance package was Cobra. If it wasn’t than you would need to get a Cobra packet from his past HR Department to continue your benefits, and continue up to 18 months. As far as receiving the reduction, it goes from the last day of benefits, so if you lose your benefits after February 28th 2010, than you are not eligible for the reduction. You have to lose your benefits before then to be eligible for the Stimulus.
