Q: I recently lost my dependent status from my dad's insurance and I have decided to enroll in COBRA. My dad is still employed and is covered under the group insurance. I have a pre-existing condition so this is my only option as far as insurance goes, but the COBRA payments are more than I can afford. The way I understand it I am ineligible for the subsidy because my dad is still employed, same goes for the hctc tax credit. Is there any type of assistance I can get to help pay my premiums?
A: Unfortunately, not that I am aware of. You can look into other individual options, but it sounds as if you have a pre-existing condition that is making you ineligible. If you are not eligible for the subsidy (if you are involuntarily terminated, you just lost your dependent status) I don’t know of any assistance. If you feel that you cannot afford COBRA you can always call your State Department of Insurance to see if your State can either offer you aid or possibly offer you a plan through the State.
