Q: I just graduated from college and got my first job with benefits, including insurance. Before graduation and shortly after I was working part-time for a local company and did not have insurance through my employer. At my current job, my insurance will go into effect after I have been there for 60 days, which is still about 7 weeks from now. We recently learned that my wife is 5 weeks pregnant. Can we get COBRA to cover the pregnancy or can we not get coverage because this was a preexisting medical condition? I am worried that United (which will be our insurance company in 7 weeks) won't cover the pregnancy because they will say it's a preexisting medical condition. Can we get COBRA? What are our options?
A: You are not eligible for COBRA. COBRA is a continuation of an employer's group health policy. These events apply to the covered employee and their dependants that are covered under the policy
1. Voluntary or involuntary termination of employment (unless due to gross misconduct)
2. Your working hours have been reduced
These events apply to covered spouses and the dependants.
1. Death of employee.
2. Divorce or legal separation.
3. Loss of dependant status, or when a child comes off of employees insurance due to age or school status.
4. Employee is entitled to Medicare benefits
You may want to contact your state's Department of Insurance to see if they have a policy available for your you and your wife.
