Q: I have cobra thru my former employer since February 2007 (now I am self employed). My insurance expires in July 2008. My question is, if I get pregnant in the middle of my coverage, before it ends, and my delivery due date is after July 2008, can I extend my cobra? What are my options? Otherwise I will not have insurance at the time of the delivery. Because I don't think other insurance will accept me pregnant. What should I do? Thanks!
A: Well, once you have exhausted your 18 months of COBRA there are few ways to get an extension. Your being pregnant, will not be a qualifying event for extension. If you have other group health coverage with out a lapse in coverage, then the pregnancy should be covered by law. If you are trying to obtain individual coverage, you will more than likely have trouble finding an insurance carrier that will cover a preexisting pregnancy. You may have to look into state issued insurance to see if you qualify financially.
