Q: During payment times, my father can't get his prescription medicine because he's not covered. Is it true that COBRA takes a really long time to process payments and that between payments members are not covered?
A: No, the plan administrator must process the paperwork and payments in a timely matter. Once they receive your payment they process it right a way so you will not lose your COBRA continuation. There is not a lapse of coverage between payments unless you do not mail yourpayment in by the due date. You have a grace period of 30 days if you don't mail your payment to the plan administrator by the due date. If your payment was not received by the due date they will suspend your coverage during this grace period until they receive your payment. Once payment is received they will pay for any claims that occurred during the grace period.
