Q: My daughter was told today by her employer to elect COBRA--go on-line and get form without an explanation. She currently has Blue Cross. The company is a partnership to my understanding. What would prompt them to take this action? They currently pay her insurance premium.
A: The employer is responsible for getting the COBRA packet to your daughter. They probably have a 3rd party administrator that handles the COBRA paperwork on their behalf. This administrator could have a website that will allow an employee to sign up on line. They must provide your daughter the COBRA packet with in 45 days of her last day of work or the day her group benefits ended on. Since, she no longer working for that employer but still has their coverage; she will be responsible for 100% of the monthly premiums. Plus, the employer can add a 2% administrative fee to that cost.
