Q:  My former employer refused to let me purchase cobra on a child we are adopting. They say because the adoption is not finalized he does not qualify.  Is this employer right?

A:  The law allows you to add an adopted child to your COBRA continuation. However, the adoption must be finalized.   You have 30 days from the adoption to add the child to your COBRA coverage.
