Q: My sister and I worked for the same company; which closed down our office in Dec. 2006. We had to purchase the COBRA insurance.. Our payments were sent in every month and we did not miss a month of payments. Our payment was late 1 day and they couldn't find it so they have terminated our insurance. We both have diabetes and high blood pressure. I myself have Chronic Kidney disease and must have IV Iron shots every other week. We know how important insurance is and I am hoping to have a kidney transplant to get back to feeling good but I know if we are terminated for lack of payment we will not be able to get coverage that we can afford for our existing problems. WE NEED insurance and need to be reinstated. We have tried to show proof of everything possible so we can be reinstated.
A: Your payment for COBRA must be made by the due date. If it is not made when due your COBRA coverage will be suspended. Usually you have a 30 day grace period to send in your payment. Payments that are made after the 30 day grace period do not have to be accepted by your previous employer and your COBRA continuation coverage will be terminated. Since your previous employer will not accept your late payment, you should contact your state’s department of insurance.
