Q: My brother has COBRA insurance. His 18 months of coverage will be over in December. He has a serious heart condition and is currently under a cardiologist's care. Is there any way he can extend his coverage?
A: If a person is deemed legally disabled (by the Social Security Administration) before or within the first 60 days of COBRA coverage, he is eligible for an additional 11 months. Also, the employer must be informed with-in 60 days of receiving the notification from the Social Security Administration and before the first 18 months end. The total coverage time would be up to 29 months.
