Q: I am recently unemployed, all my employer said was your insurance stopped at the end of the month. I asked her if I could continue and and I will pay. She did not tell me about COBRA. What do I do now?
A: COBRA law requires employers with group health plans to offer employees the opportunity to continue temporarily their group health care coverage under their employer's plan if their coverage otherwise would cease due to termination, layoff, or other change in employment status (referred to as "qualifying events"). If your employer has more than 20 employees and is not a church organization then they must offer you the COBRA continuation. If your employer does not comply with COBRA laws then you should contact the US Department of Labor at 1-866-487-2365.
If you have lost your opportunity for insurance with your past employer and are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Here for more information.
