Q: I am coming off my parents insurance. They have Kaiser which is further than 3 hours from where I live. If I elect to have COBRA can I select a different type of health care or a doctor outside of the Kaiser group? I can not keep driving such a distance each when I need medical treatment.
A: COBRA is a continuation of the same policy, same benefits that you had prior to the qualifying event. If your parent's employer offers other health insurance plans, you may have to wait until open enrollment to make any changes to your coverage. Your parent should contact the HR department or Benefits Manager at their employer to see what your options are.
If you are a healthy person who does not live in NY, NJ, MA, or VT and would be interested in a lower cost Alternative to COBRA please Click Here With this policy you have the ability to choose your deductible: $250, $500, $1000 or $2500.
