Q:   I work for a school. Last school year I worked part time, 3 days. This school year I went to 2 days. Last year I had coverage at a higher rate. On November 14, I received a letter stating because I had gone to less hours I was no longer eligible for benefits and they backed it up to a termination date of August 31. They took my insurance payments out of my check in Sept., Oct and Nov. Can I get COBRA with no lapse in coverage?

A:   An employee is eligible for COBRA coverage when they lose the group health benefits because their hours were reduced.  Once you return the completed the election form and first payment to your employer or their plan administrator, the COBRA continuation coverage is retro-active to your last day or last day of benefits.  There will be no lapse in coverage.
