Q: We just applied for Cobra Insurance. Our daughter, who is in college, has decided to get her own policy thru the school. Is there a way my husband and I can go to the Employee plus one instead of family policy? Also how long does it take to get information so I can get my prescriptions filled? I'm about out.
A: You will need to contact your previous employer or plan administrator so they can remove your daughter from the coverage and adjust your COBRA premium to reflect the change. Your COBRA coverage is retro-active. The insurance company will reimburse you for any prescriptions that you pay out of pocket while you are waiting for the paperwork to be processed. You should be able to use the same insurance ID card that you had prior to signing up for COBRA.If you call the customer service number on the back of the ID card, they can tell you if your COBRA has been activated. The plan administrator will also be able to tell you. They must process your COBRA paperwork and payments in a “timely manner” usually with-in 30 days from the receiving date.
