Q: I was laid off and I have spoke to the corporate office by phone once, and sent an email once. I have never heard back or received anything concerning COBRA. What do I do now?
A: If your previous employer has more than 20 employees and you were on the group health insurance before you left, you are eligible for COBRA continuation. Your employer is legally responsible for sending you the COBRA packet within 45 days from your last day of work or the last day of your group benefits. If your employer did not send you the election form for COBRA continuation they can be fined and severely penalized. You should contact the US Department of Labor at 1-866-487-2365 because they regulate the COBRA law and make sure that all employers comply.
If you have lost your opportunity for insurance with your past employer and are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Here for more information.
