Q: My dad is on long term disability and we are now in a bind, because the vision and health plan we have only lasts for 18months and now it is ending. We have Cobra Health insurance. What would it take to enroll in a COBRA plan that includes medical, dental, and vision and what is the cost? Keeping in mind that my dad is on long-term disability and has a wife and four children and the insurance would probably have to be individual because he is not able to work.
A: If your dad has been deemed disabled by the Social Security Administration you should ask his previous employer if you are eligible for the 11 month disability extension. If you are not eligible for an extension, the COBRA coverage will expire after 18 months. You should contact the insurance company to see if they offer COBRA conversion policies. You may need to contact your state’s department of insurance to obtain insurance for your dad if he has past or current medical conditions that will keep him from getting an individual policy. If the rest of the family is healthy you can apply for an individual family plan.
If you have lost your opportunity for insurance with your past employer and are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Here for more information.
