Q: My husband was employed by a company for 35 years. He suffered a stroke and retired on July 1, 2007. His company has been paying for both his and my insurance. He will be eligible for Medicare in March, 2008. I have been informed that his previous employer is changing health insurance companies. My question is: Will he and I be covered under the old insurance company or the new insurance company? We both have pre-existing conditions, and want to have continued coverage. We have not received any information from his former employer and are at a lost on what to do.
A: Your coverage will change if the group health plan offered to you by the employer has changed. Your coverage is treated the same as active employees. You will not have a lapse or gap in coverage. His former employer will provide you with a Summary of Plan Description and new ID cards.
