Q:I was diagnosed with prostate cancer over a year ago. Had my prostate removed (prostatectomy) on 12-15-06. Have had no evidence of cancer since - numerous blood tests with non-detectable PSA. Is this a pre-existing condition that will preclude me from getting private health insurance? I turn 63 on 11-26 and would like to retire. I can wait until the end of May and then use COBRA until I'm 65. If I can acquire private health insurance, I will retire before end of May.
A:Since your cancer has occurred with-in 5 years, it is considered a pre-existing condition. You most likely will not find a private health insurance company that will insure you because of your medical history.COBRA coverage can be expensive; however, you can not be turned down if you employer has more than 20 employees.
