Q: I am leaving my current job and this is also the date for my insurance termination. I have 60 days from this date to elect or waive COBRA coverage. I was offered both health and dental insurance through COBRA Within 60 days, can I decide I only want to continue my dental insurance? If so, will I only be responsible for dental premiums retro back to my last day of work? If I incur any dental expenses during this election time can I turn in the receipts for reimbursement? These are covered with retro coverage correct?
A: You can choose to elect COBRA for only the Dental coverage. Once you elect COBRA and your first payment is received, the insurance is retro-active to your last day of group benefits. If you have to seek dental treatment within the election period, you may have to pay out of pocket and/or hang on the bills and receipts. Once the policy has been reinstated you can turn those claims into the insurance company for review and reimbursement. Your coverage should be the same, so you can give the information from the insurance company that you had to the facility and explain to them that you are in the election process of COBRA.
