Q: I recently resigned from my position where I had full medical coverage. I was told that I could elect to continue my coverage under COBRA until 60 days after the date my BCBS coverage ended. My question is: if, within those 60 days, I get injured or have a need to visit a doctor BEFORE I choose to elect COBRA, would I, after the fact, be able to choose COBRA - AND - would COBRA cover the incident? I was told this is so by my Benefits Office, but I wanted to confirm.
A: COBRA will begin the day after the qualifying event took place or when the group health coverage ceased because of a qualifying event. COBRA is a continuation of coverage and there will not be a lapse in coverage. You can not be denied COBRA continuation because you had a claim during the election period. Any claims that occur during the election period will be paid by the insurance company based on the group plan's benefits.
