Q:  I have a friend who was recently laid off from work and its starting to look like he may need some help with a drug abuse program. I would like to find out what cobra covers in these situations and what needs to be done to get him into a 28 day program.

A:  Generally, the continuation coverage is the same health benefits he had the day before the qualifying event (he was laid off). Those health benefits are defined as medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance and prescription drug plans. An HSA is also considered a health benefit and falls under COBRA law. To see if a drug abuse program is covered under his insurance, he is going to have to contact his insurance company for specific coverage details.
