Q: I am employed (Calif.) and have health insurance thru my employer. My HR says if I leave San Diego, CA and move to Pittsburgh, PA I CAN NOT have Cobra because the insurance we have here at work (Sharp Health Plan) is for San Diego County ONLY and not transferable to another state. Is this true? I really want to move out of State (I have Cancer) but, if I can not have coverage thru Cobra, what do I do? My work said I would just have no insurance and said "Good Luck finding a plan on my own".
A: I suggest that you call your insurance company, their phone number will be on your insurance ID card. The insurance company will tell you if they provide coverage out of state. Your employer must offer alternative coverage to qualified beneficiaries that will be moving outside their insurance coverage area. The employer must make the alternative coverage available before on by the date the beneficiary moves, or if it is later, than the first day of the month following the month you made the request to move and needed alternate coverage
