Q:  My husband was let go and COBRA with Aetna, started 9/1/06 (husband & wife). July 1, 2007 he received Medicare. I called Aetna and they gave me my own policy number and told me I was covered for 18 months starting 7/1/07. My husband is back at  work, but under Medicare. His company notified me that Aetna will only be covering me through the end of Feb. 2008. Member dept of Aetna says I am entitled to my own 18 months.

A:  When your husband started receiving Medicare Benefits, you became eligible for an additional 18 months of COBRA coverage for a maximum of 36 months.  However, if your husband went back to work full-time, you and he would be eligible for the group benefits that are given to an active employee. You should contact the employer to find out if you are going to be receiving the “active” employee benefits.
