Q: I have elected to take COBRA and have sent in my first month’s premium which re-activated my medical coverage. However, I have not made a payment in over two months. During that time I went to the doctor's and submitted my insurance card. I now received a bill from my previous employer for 3 months of medical insurance. What would happen if I chose not to pay? Would I be liable to pay for the medical insurance for the 3 months since I was submitting my insurance card to the doctors or would I just be liable for full payment of the medical bills incurred during the 3 months which I did not pay?
A:Any bills that occurred during your first month of COBRA will be paid. However, since you didn’t pay for any other months and had claims you would have to pay your medical bills. If the insurance company already paid them, they will send you a bill for the amount they paid out.
