Q: I currently have Cobra which will expire in 2008. My Cobra is from my employer. My age is 58 and my hubsand who is also covered is 64. In Oct 2008 when Cobra expires my hubsand will have 3 months before he turns 65 and can get on medicare. My question is this can I convert my current COBRA over to a private policy for the both of us and then when my hubsand turns 65 use this as his supmental plan at that time?
A: When your COBRA continuation ends you may be able to convert your previous employer’s group policy to an individual policy only if the insurance company offers individual policies. You will need to contact your health insurance company to see if they offer a COBRA conversion policy. The individual policy might not have the same coverage and might cost more than the COBRA continuation. An insurance company can base the premiums on your sex, age and your past medical history.
