Q: I'm six months pregnant and getting ready to give notice at my job I need to make sure that I don't need to sign up for Cobra before I give notice so that I don't have a lapse in coverage. My company is being very hard to deal with and I'm a little scared at this point that I will end up without health insurance.
A: COBRA is a federal law, which allows you to continue on your previous employer’s group health plan. If your employer has more than 20 employees they have to offer you COBRA. They have up to 45 days from your last day of group benefits to mail you the election form. When you elect COBRA coverage, it will be a continuation of the same group health plan that you had before you left. If the pregnancy was covered now, it will be covered with the COBRA election. Since this would be the same policy, the benefits would be the same. If your employer does not give you your COBRA rights, you should contact the US Department of Labor at 1-866-487-2365.
