Q: I received a notice from my former employer stating, "your COBRA insurance payments have not been made for the past 5 months. The total due now is $xxxx.xx. This amount is due immediatley. At this time the process has started to remove coverage for you from our policy due to lack of payments received." I have been covered by my new employer's isurance since Sept. 30. I stopped sendding payments but failed to contact my previous employer to cancel the COBRA coverage. How much of this am I liable for? What if I do not pay them?
A: As long as you can provide your previous employer or their COBRA plan administrator proof that you had other insurance you will not be liable for the COBRA premiums. A copy of new employer's group plan ID card should be sufficient proof.
