Q: My husband and I quit our jobs in December 2007. He tried to get answers as to what was covered before he elected the new insurance for his new job. They wouldn't tell him anything until he had elected the insurance. After we elected the insurance, we found out my condition was not covered. Am I still eligible for COBRA coverage from my old company for me? If not, if my husband drops me from his coverage, can I then pick up COBRA coverage?
A: There is a limited amount of time you can sign up for COBRA. The employer has up to 45 days to mail you the COBRA packet from the last day of group benefits. Then you have 60 days to elect COBRA once you receive it. If the 60 day election period has not expired then you would still be able to sign up for COBRA. You should contact the previous employer to see if you are still eligible to sign up for COBRA continuation.
