Q: I am currently employed right now in Florida but I'm quiting in May to move to NY. I have a pre-existing condition. Can I get coverage from Cobra even with this condition? How much will it be? Thanks.
A: COBRA is a continuation of the same group health insurance that you had with your past employer. If those health conditions were covered under the policy before they should be covered under the continuation. You would need to contact your employer for the cost.
Also, if your employer’s policy is an HMO or PPO and there are no network providers where you move to, your employer is required to offer you an alternative policy. The alternative policy must be made available by the date you relocate or later, the 1st day of the month you request the alternative policy.
