Q:  I am currently employed in the US. I will be moving to Canada to accept a new job. However, my wife wants to stay in the US until she has given birth to our child (in a few months.  Currently we are covered by my company. She is currently employed and her employer does offer health coverage. Q1) could she transfer out of my coverage and elect to be covered by her own company as this is a life event? Q2) or can I buy COBRA coverage for her until she joins me in Canada?

A:   Your wife’s best option would be COBRA through your US employer. Because she is pregnant she will not be able to find other coverage. If her employer offered health benefits she may be eligible for special enrollment and the pregnancy could be covered.   However, special enrollments do not apply to individual plans only group plans.
