Q: My son is a full time college student, insured by Cobra because his father lost his job. I was told by a teacher friend that a full time dependent student could stay on Cobra as long as they were in school, not just the regular 18 months. Is that true?
A: The amount of time a beneficiary can remain on COBRA will depend on the qualifying event. If the dependent child’s benefits ended because his father lost his job, the dependent child is allowed a maximum of 18 months.
There are some situations that may allow the beneficiary to keep COBRA longer. If they become disabled during the first 60 days of COBRA continuation coverage they may be eligible for an 11 month extension. If the covered employee dies or there is a divorce the spouse and dependent child are allowed a maximum of 36 months. Also, if the dependent child loses his dependent child status he could be eligible for 36 months.
