Q:  How do I sign up through a COBRA plan administrator?

A:  Most employers hire a 3rd party COBRA plan administrator to handle the COBRA paperwork and payment processing for them.  The employer or their plan administrator has up to 45 days to mail you the COBRA paperwork from your last day of work.  Some COBRA plan administrators will give you the option of signing up on line or by telephone. Your employer can give you the contact information of their plan administrator.  However, you may have to wait until you receive the paperwork before you can sign up. Once you elect COBRA, your coverage is retro-active to your last day of benefits. You will not have a lapse or gap in coverage.
