Q:  My son had a baby and thought the hospital was contacting COBRA about adding the baby as a dependent. The hospital did not handle it and my son did not find out until after the 30 days. What can he do to get his son added as a dependent?

A:  Usually you must notify the previous employer or their COBRA plan administrator with in 30 days of the birth.  If the employer can’t add the baby now, you will have to wait until they offer open enrollment which is once a year.  You should contact your state’s department of insurance at www.naic.org to see what insurance plans they have available for a newborn.
