Q: I have been on a medical leave from my company for cancer treatment. I was informed on Monday my company has started the process of going into receivership and that I was laid off effective the Friday prior. My question is, does my company going out of business affect my ability to apply for a COBRA policy? If not, what are my alternatives? I live in Washington State

A: If your previous employer closes the business and they no longer offer a group health benefits to any employee, then COBRA will not be an option.  If you can not continue your coverage through COBRA, you should contact your state’s department of insurance at www.naic.org . Most states have a policy available for residence who lost their COBRA and/or can not obtain insurance elsewhere because of a medical condition.
